It’s coming up to creepy season and what better way to get into the spirit than reading about the spookiest cars from film, books and TV?
From murderous machines to horrifying “hearses” and family favourites with a spooky side, here are some of our creepiest cars and villainous vehicles…
Read on, if you dare…
Christine is a 1958 Plymouth Fury with a mind of her own. She starred in Stephen King’s 1983 novel and John Carpenter’s film adaptation the same year. One of THE famous horror movie cars, Christine is possessed by a malevolent force - and anyone who sets foot inside should fear for their life.
A highly customised 1971 Lincoln Continental Mark III that terrorises a small desert town, The Car is both demonic and iconic. In the 1977 cult classic film, nobody sees either who, or what, is behind the wheel.
Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell) drives a matte-black 1970 - or 1971, according to the film’s characters - Chevrolet Nova, with skull and crossbones decals. He claims this vehicle is 100% death proof. But that only applies if you’re in the driver’s seat - and none of his passenger victims get to sit there.
The rust-covered 1955 Peterbilt 281 truck relentlessly stalks travelling salesman David Mann (Dennis Weaver) in his unassuming 1971 Plymouth Valiant. You never see who’s driving in the cab, and it’s this that helps establish this larger-than-life vehicle as one of the spookiest movie cars.
If there’s something strange in your neighbourhood, you might just hear the familiar siren of the Ecto-1 as those ghosts prepare to get busted. A 1959 Cadillac that could serve both as an ambulance and a hearse, it has ample space for proton packs, traps and other ghost-hunting equipment. Who are you gonna call?
A hot rod car made from three Ford Model T bodies fused together, the Munster Koach is 19 feet long. Taking more than 500 hours to build, the unmistakable car from the hit ‘60s TV comedy has a coffin-inspired body for an added fright delight.
Although it’s never been confirmed what type of van the Mystery Machine is, its psychedelic artwork makes it instantly iconic and recognisable. While the 2002 film featured a customised 1972 Bedford CF, many fans of the original Scooby-Doo cartoons think it’s akin to a mid-1960s Dodge A100. It’s definitely helped the Scooby gang solve many mysteries, with ample space for Scooby snacks to boot.
Would you really expect the creepy, kooky, mysterious and spooky Addams Family to drive anything other than a modified “hearse”? The vehicle in the original series is actually a 1933 Packard V-12 - a luxury car in its day. Gothic, vintage and featuring enough space for Lurch to drive the family around - plus a pull-down bed or, in the Wednesday series, bench seats and bat-wing side mirrors - it’s a darkly delicious drive.
If you’re borrowing a friend or family member’s car for a Halloween outing, you can take out temporary car insurance to protect yourself from bumps in the night.
Tempcover’s policies don’t affect the owner’s annual policy or no claims discount. So whether you’re driving someone else’s car or taking over driving after a spooky party, we’ve got you covered over Halloween and beyond.
