Hidden car insurance fees

There’s no getting around the fact car insurance is an expensive business, but did you know that 2.6 million people claim they cannot afford cover on an annual basis?

According to Citizens Advice research, the cost of car insurance has risen by 40% in the last two years, leading to many either having to borrow money or cut back on essentials like food or energy bills.

Citizens Advice also claims drivers aged between 18 and 34 often pay twice as much as drivers in the age bracket above them for their annual insurance. They’re also more likely to pay on a monthly basis, which incurs extra interest.

What hidden car insurance fees should I look out for?

There are a number of ‘hidden’ fees in annual insurance policies that you should watch out for, including:

APRs

If you’re paying monthly you’ll be charged an annual percentage rate (APR) by the insurer or finance company on top of the amount of insurance you pay for. When added together, it can increase the total cost you will pay.

Adjustment fees

Need to update your policy details? From changing your address to amending a job title, many insurers charge a fee to do this. Although it’s often a smaller fee (between £25 and £50), it will soon add up if you have to make multiple changes over the course of 12 months.

Cancellation charges

Selling your car or don’t need to drive for any reason? It’s likely you’ll have to pay a substantial cancellation fee to get out of your annual contract…

Add-ons

Although they could come in useful, if money is tight you could think about if you really need add-ons like key cover or alloy insurance? Remember you can always add them later on. You should also watch out for any paid-for add-ons that come bundled in automatically - and examine if this has any impact on your price.

Paperwork fees

Many insurance providers now charge a small fee for posting your documents. Some may offer paper-free solutions via accounts on their website or an app. See if you can opt out of the paid-for postage before confirming your policy.

Don’t let hidden costs steer you wrong

How can you spot these hidden fees and potentially save yourself some money?

  • Check the details of every policy you compare - Are they as comprehensive as they initially seem? You don’t want to be caught out if you have to make a claim.
  • Read the small print - All the terms and hidden fees will be included in here. Keep an eye out for cancellations, adjustments, and cooling off charges
  • Mileage - If you go over your estimated mileage, your insurance could be invalid. This could lead to a fixed penalty fine of £300, 6 points and potentially disqualification. Not something you want to do when trying to save money…
  • Double-check your information - Changing address or your name? Let the insurer know asap and if you’re renewing, double-check all your details are correct. Failing to have the right information could leave you uninsured.
  • Decide on your excess - Car insurance excess is the amount you agree to pay before your insurance covers the rest of the claim. You can choose how much you want to pay, but make sure you can afford it! Find out more about understanding car insurance excess.
  • Contact the insurer with any questions - You can request a full breakdown of costs before buying or renewing a policy.
  • Make sure you know the APR - If paying for annual cover in monthly instalments, factor in the annual percentage rate as this can significantly increase your bill.
  • Shop around - If your annual cover auto-renews, make sure you know how much money you’ll be paying and get quotes with other insurers to find a policy that works for you and your financial situation.

Give temporary car insurance a try

If you have a driving licence and are struggling to afford an annual policy, why not consider temporary car insurance?

This alternative to the traditional cover lets you choose when a policy starts and ends - meaning you only pay for the time you need. It could be the ideal solution if you’re planning on driving a friend or family member’s car.

Temporary car insurance helps you get where you want to go, when you need to. It can help you get to that interview or important appointment on time. You only pay one price for the time you need - from one hour for a quick nip to the shops, to 28 days if you need something longer term.

When you buy a temporary car insurance policy, you receive one transparent quote one transparent quote which includes the cost of your insurance and the Tempcover fee for arranging the policy. Unlike with annual policies, there are no separate adjustment or cancellation fees.
